Homemade Beef Burger

After moving to the US, I have tried so many types of burgers that it’s become a part of my regular diet. Most people think of burgers as unhealthy, but you can change that around based on the ingredients you use. I tried my sister’s beef burger recipe this Saturday, and it was ahhhmazing. It was not at all greasy and heavy, but delicious and well seasoned. Burgers, loaded fries, and a good movie….perfect for a Saturday evening!

Time:

  • Prep time – 20 minutes
  • Cook time – 10 minutes

Ingredients for Beef patty:

  • Lean Ground Beef (I used 95% lean) – 500 g
  • Onion Powder – 2 tsp
  • Garlic Powder – 2 tsp
  • Smoked Paprika – 3 tsp
  • Cayenne Pepper – 2 tsp
  • Egg Yolk – 1
  • Worcestershire Sauce – 2 tbsp
  • Ketchup – 2 tbsp
  • Salt and Pepper to season

Ingredients for Burger:

  • Burger buns – 6
    • I used smaller burger buns as I like more meat and less bread
  • Shredded Lettuce (Divided for 6 burgers) – 1 cup
  • Mild Shredded Cheddar (Divided for 6 burgers) – 1/2 cup
  • Ranch (Divided for 6 burgers) – 1 tbsp
  • Beef Bacon (Strips and divided for 6 burgers) – 1/2 cup (OPTIONAL)
    • To prepare the beef bacon, sauté the strips in a pan (no oil needed) until it is crispy
  • Caramelized Onions (Divided for 6 burgers) – 1 cup
    • Take one large yellow onion and slice into thin circles. Heat 2 tbsp unsalted butter in a pan and add the onions to hot butter. Add a pinch of sugar and salt. Stir fry onion till it caramelizes to a light brown color
  • Ketchup

Method:

  1. Mix the beef patty ingredients until well combined. Let the mixture rest for 15 minutes at least
  2. Prepare burger patties with the mixture and set aside (the patties need to be made slightly larger in diameter compared to the burger bun as they shrink while cooking). I use approximately 150 gms per patty
  3. Heat a large pan or grill and place the patty inside to this. Let it cook for 5 minutes on one side, then flip and put cheddar cheese on the surface of the cooked side (it will melt slowly). Let the other side cook for 7 minutes
  4. Meanwhile, place butter both halves of the burger bun and toast it on a hot pan till golden brown
  5. To assemble a burger, place the cooked beef patty on the bottom half of the burger bun. Then add the caramelized onions, ranch, beef bacon, lettuce, and the top half of burger bun
  6. Enjoy with ketchup or hot sauce 🙂
