Thai Beef Basil

I’ve been obsessing with dishes that combine meat and basil lately and this one is the latest. Thai Beef Basil combines the best sauces to make one of the most delicious stir fry dishes ever! It tastes so good that I felt transported to a Thai street food stall. Next time you want some beef make yourself a treat using the below ingredients and enjoy the benefits of a home-cooked meal filled with flavors from the east 🙂


  • Prep time – 20 minutes
  • Cook time – 30 minutes


  • Beef (Sliced Thin) – 800 g
  • Cornstarch – 3 tbsp
  • Water – 2 tbsp
  • Olive Oil
    • For marinating the beef – 2 tbsp
    • For frying the beef – 3 tbsp
    • For frying the onions – 2 tbsp
  • Garlic – 2 tbsp
  • Red or Green Bell Pepper (Sliced thin) – 1
  • Red Onion (Sliced) – 1
  • Low Sodium Soy Sauce – 3 tbsp
  • Fish Sauce – 3 tbsp
  • Kecap Manis – 2 tbsp
  • Oyster Sauce – 2 tbsp
  • Brown Sugar – 1 tsp
  • Basil Leaves (Roughly Chopped) – 2 cups
  • Cilantro Leaves for Garnish – 3 tbsp


  1. Mix the beef, cornstarch, water and olive oil (2 tbsp) in a large bowl. Mix until the beef is well coated with the cornstarch and olive oil
  2. Heat a wok with some olive oil (3 tbsp) and add 1/3rd of the marinated beef. Sear the beef until it has seared and all the redness has gone. Then remove from the wok and set aside. Do this for the remaining beef in small portions
  3. Add more olive oil (2 tbsp) to the wok and let it get hot. Add the garlic and bell peppers and saute for one minute
  4. Add the onions and stir-fry until the onions have caramelized (about 10 minutes)
  5. Add the seared beef and then add the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and sugar. Mix everything together for 5 minutes
  6. Add the basil leaves and mix until the basil has wilted
  7. Garnish with coriander and serve warm with plain rice
