Roti Jala

Roti Jala a.k.a Net bread is a Malaysian snack which is served with meat curries. I have grown up eating roti jala and it is an addiction. It not only tastes good but looks amazing with its lacy appearance. My favorite place to enjoy roti jala was at the night market (pasar malam) in Malaysia. They had incredible, soupy chicken curries, to dip the roti jala in. Yummm! Try this at home with some Malay Chicken Curry 🙂

Time:

  • Prep time – 10 minutes
  • Cook time – 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • All Purpose Flour – 200 g
  • Large Eggs – 2
  • Vegetable Oil – 2 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp
  • Water – 200 ml
  • Coconut Milk – 200 ml
  • Salt – 1 tsp

Method:

  1. Combine all the ingredients and whisk until the batter is free of lumps
  2. Strain the batter
  3. Heat a non stick pan on the stove and lightly spread little oil
  4. Fill the roti jala mold with batter (half full) and gently pour on the heated non stick pan in circular and crisis cross movement
    1. Note: If you don’t have a roti jala mold, take a plastic bag, make small holes and fill it with the batter
  5. When the batter is set fold into any shape of your choice (Triangles, rolls etcetera)
  6. Enjoy with a gravy dish 🙂
